FALL PLUMBING CHECKLIST

It’s fall and it is time to prepare your plumbing for the colder months. Although Florida winters can be quite mild, it is possible for plumbing problems to develop if your maintenance has not been done properly. Follow these tips to address your plumbing problems.

  • Disconnect Water Hoses Cold weather can cause hoses or any water left at the connection to freeze.
  • Inspect your Faucets: Inspect both the inside and exterior faucets for possible leaks. Leaky faucets can not only be annoying but can also cause water damage, cracks and higher water bills.
  • Clear Your Gutters of Built-up Debris: Yard waste, pollen, dirt, and other debris can build up in your gutters. The buildup can cause problems with drainage and even damage to your gutters, depending on how cold it is.
  • Fix Any Clogs: Now’s the time to fix any slow-moving drains or clogs in your house. You will want to ensure that your plumbing works well for the holiday season.
  • Check Your Valves. Valves are susceptible to wear and tear over time. It is crucial that you make sure they function as intended. You can test them to ensure that they are moving freely and you can inspect them for damage.
  • Turn off your water heater: As the temperature drops, your water heater will have to work harder than ever. The buildup of sediment in your water heater can cause corrosion, which can reduce its efficiency and decrease the life expectancy. This buildup can be removed by flushing it out to ensure it works properly.
  • Insulate Your Pipes If Needed: To protect your pipes from dropping temperatures, heat tape or crawl spaces in your home should be used.
  • Inspect and Clean Your Sump Pump: A sump pump can freeze or shut down if it is too cold. To ensure that your sump pumps work as efficiently as possible, you should have them cleaned and checked every year.
